Louisiana Sports Betting Legalization Timeline

Louisiana lawmakers had been trying to pass a sports betting bill into law since 2019, but failed to do so on their first attempt. However, there was enough momentum to try again in 2020 with the sports wagering bill making it on election ballots.
With help from the likes of Senator Cameron Henry, mobile betting was set to be decided in 2021, and it passed. Sports betting went live in casinos in October 2021 and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board passed emergency sports betting rules effective Aug. 23. This started the process of sportsbook licensing. By October, there were retail sportsbooks opening in the state.
Online sportsbooks opened on Jan. 28, 2022 as part of the legislative decisions in 2021.

Common Types of Bets/Terms

Point Spreads
The point spread in the margin of victory in a game. A team must win or lose by a specific number of points in order to cover the point spread and win the bet.
For example, if you take the New Orleans Pelicans to cover the spread as 2.5-point favorites against the Chicago Bulls, they must win by three or more points for your bet to win.
Moneyline
A moneyline bet is simply choosing the winner of a sporting event regardless of the point spread. You can choose the favorite or underdog to win the game.
The New Orleans Pelicans beating the Los Angeles Lakers outright would constitute a moneyline bet.
OVER/UNDER and Total Bets
An over/under or total is a bet on the total points scored in a sporting event. Over/unders are also used on prop bets.
Total bets can be extremely fun to root for, especially if you’re going to take the OVER when the high-powered Pelicans offense is playing this season in the NBA.
Parlay
A parlay is a bet where multiple wagers are linked together in order to increase the odds on the payout. Every leg (bet) in the parlay must hit in order for it to win.
Bettors can get creative with an all-New Orleans parlay early in the NFL season with the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans to win.
Prop Bet
A prop bet is any bet placed on a game that is not not directly affecting the game's final outcome. This can include player props as well as game props.
Want to bet on Alvin Kamara’s rushing yards? What about Zion Williamson’s points? If so, prop bets are the way to go.
