2022 American League East Division Prediction, Odds (Blue Jays Set for Division Win)
By Reed Wallach
The American League East is loaded this season, plain and simple.
The Toronto Blue Jays wasted no time beefing up their roster, acquiring the likes of Kevin Gausman and Matt Chapman to join with young stars including Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, Toronto is in for a tough battle atop the division with the always dangerous Tampa Bay Rays and reloaded Boston Red Sox, who singed infield Trevor Story.
The New York Yankees have plenty of talent on hand and will hope to return to their AL contender status while the Baltimore Orioles will hope to play spoiler for a few of their divisional foes this season.
Let's take a look at where these teams stack up in the win total market at WynnBET Sportsbook before breaking down each team's outlook for the 2022 season.
AL East Division Win Total Predictions
- Blue Jays: 92 (Over -110/Under -110)
- Yankees: 92 (Over -110/Under)
- Rays: 89.5 (Over -110/Under -110)
- Red Sox: 86.5 (Over -110/Under -110)
- Orioles: 61.5 (Over -110/Under -110)
Blue Jays Win Total Prediction
Toronto was one of the most active teams in free agency this offseason and will be playing all of their games in Toronto for the first time since 2019. After narrowly missing the postseason in 2021 and a budding cast of hitters at the plate, the Blue Jays are set to be contenders in 2022.
The Blue Jays had a Pythagorean win total of 99, 8 games better than their 91 clip, so there should be some positive regression there way. While the team did lose Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, the team did replace him with a host of talented arms like Gausman and Yusei Kikuchi.
Simply put, this club is loaded with talented, but the division is super tight with four teams having win totals north of 86. I'd rather take a shot on the Blue Jays to win the AL East or the pennant rather than a -110 payout on their win total considering one injury can take them off pace.
New York Yankees Win Total Prediction
There is no denying the talent of the Yankees lineup, but the rotation has some concerns on the back end after Gerrit Cole and the looming Aaron Boone situation at manager.
The team was quiet during the offseason and has injury prone position players like Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. When healthy, this may be the most dangerous lineup in all of baseball, but again, depth is a concern over a long season. In a crowded division with teams that were more aggressive in the offseason, I see the Yankees fighting for a Wild Card berth and hanging around 90 wins rather than pushing 100 and taking home the AL East crown this season.
This team is in need of a jolt and the front office didn't address in the offseason so I see this team falling a bit short of expectations, similar to last season.
Tampa Bay Rays Win Total Prediction
No team outperform expectations like the Rays, who have become the epitome of consistency in the AL East, winning 90+ games the last 3 full seasons (the team was on a 108 win pace in the COVID-19 shortened season).
I see similar for Tampa Bay this season with second year pro and trendy MVP pick Wander Franco sitting in a lineup with the likes of Randy Arozarena and Brandon Lowe.
The pitching staff may have questions than normal as the team starts the season with Tyler Glassnow still recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the team has another emerging star in Shane Baez. Nobody gets more from his pitching staff than Kevin Cash and the Rays are always going to be a threat to win the division.
It's never a good idea to fade Tampa Bay ahead of the season, so I'll stick with consistency winning out and the Rays to finish with around 95 wins and be in the AL East race once again.
Boston Red Sox Win Total Prediction
The Red Sox have a scary lineup that features a ton of sluggers such as J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and the recently signed Trevor Story, but will the team get enough from their pitching staff to compete for the division crown?
The team has a Nathan Eovaldi, but they are waiting for Chris Sale and James Paxton for at least a month to make their season debuts. There are some veterans on the staff by way of Michael Wacha and Rich Hill, but this is a shallow unit for the time being.
Somebody in this division has to fall short of expectations with this many teams being lined in the high 80's and low 90's and I'm going to go with Boston struggling to keep up due to their issues on the mound to start the season. This is a high variance ball club heading into 2022.
Baltimore Orioles Win Total Prediction
It's always tough to gauge the Baltimore Orioles considering they play in a loaded division and they are in the midst of a lengthy rebuild, so I don't have a firm grip on this one.
The team has an exciting outfield in Cedric Mullens who is on his way to becoming a household name, but this win total is implying a 10 win improvement after the team went 52-110 last season. While win totals this low always have a lot of variance, I'd stay off of it given the season can get away from Baltimore quite quickly with the dearth of talent on hand.
Predicting the AL East Division Winner
I see this as a two team race between the Blue Jays and Rays but I'll lean with Toronto putting up a big win total this season.
This team has young and has the highest ceiling of any team in the league outside of the Dodgers. With a deep rotation and star power in the lineup, the Blue Jays are going to beat teams in countless ways.
I'm buying the hype with Toronto and like them to win the division for the first time since 2015.
