2022 Heisman Watch: C.J. Stroud Pads Heisman Trophy Resume
By Reed Wallach
The 2022 Heisman Trophy race hasn't had as much storylines as past years, but it's becoming clear that this race has very few outcomes.
While Hendon Hooker responded well after Tennessee's loss to Georgia last week, C.J. Stroud remains the front runner for the award following his five touchdown day against Indiana at home. Stroud has a similar statistical profile to every player in the race and is the leader of the best offense in college football.
If Stroud is able to lead Ohio State to wins over Maryland, Michigan and a Big Ten Championship, he will win the award, a testament to the Buckeyes' dominance this season.
Here's the latest Heisman Trophy odds:
2022 Heisman Trophy Odds
1. C.J. Stroud - Ohio State (+140) - Last Week (+180)
Stroud and the Buckeyes offense was dominant against a helpless Indiana defense, winning 56-14 at home. The offense padded their stats after they played in a wind-filled game against Northwestern last week as Stroud completed 60% of his passes for 297 yards nad five touchdowns.
This award is Stroud's to lose. He was the leader from The Athletic straw poll last week, an indicator of how voters see the race, and has the notable game against Michigan to lock it up at the end of the regular season.
As long as Ohio State wins out, Stroud will win the award.
2022 Stats: 186-277, 2,750 Passing Yards, 34 Passing TDs, 4 INT
Next Week: @ Maryland
2. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee (350) -Last Week (+130)
Hooker had the better stat line against Stroud against Missouri, combining for 400 total yards and four touchdowns, but forecasting out the next few weeks, Tennessee will be out of the public eye.
After losing to Georgia, the Vols marquee matchups are over and there will be no SEC Championship game.
Ohio State has far more to play for and have the ability to capture the national audience.
While Tennessee will likely make the College Football Playoff at thie rate, the narrative is no longer in Hooker's favor, quarterback of a one loss team. His numbers are impressive, but he is on a one loss team which will likely cost him down the stretch.
2022 Stats: 204-287, 2,888 Passing Yards, 25 Passing TDs, 2 INT, 5 Rushing TDs
Next Week: @ South Carolina
