2022 MLB Home Run Derby Power Rankings (Can Pete Alonso Keep Crown Again?)
By Peter Dewey
There are few things more entertaining in sports than watching some of baseball's best hitters slug home run after home run in the Home Run Derby on Monday night.
Pete Alonso (+200) has won the last two events in the 2019 and 2021 seasons (there wasn't a Home Run Derby in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
Alonso is back in the field and favored to win it all at WynnBET, but there are some viable challengers in the field. Ronald Acuna Jr., Julio Rodriguez and Juan Soto highlight some of the young talent in the field while veteran Albert Pujols will get a chance to add a Home Run Derby title to his Hall of Fame resume.
Let's power rank each one of these hitters ahead of tonight's event, with odds from WynnBET:
1. Pete Alonso (+200)
I mean, how can you not put Alonso No. 1? He's built for the Derby, and he knows what it takes to win after his last two appearances.
2. Juan Soto (+600)
Is this a first audition for Juan Soto after declining the Washington Nationals' 15-year $440 million extension? Maybe not, but the Nationals slugger seems like a bargain at +600.
3. Kyle Schwarber (+330)
I am a little worried about the Schwarber-Pujols upset in Round 1, just for narrative purposes. However, Schwarber's home-run swing is one of the best in the game and he should thrive in this event.
4. Ronald Acuña Jr. (+650)
Acuna Jr. is going to electric to watch as a showman, so I hope he advances deep in this contest. However, he has just eight homers this season, so he may not be as well-equipped for this event as some other sluggers.
5. Julio Rodriguez (+850)
Rodriguez is favored as the lower seed against Corey Seager in the first round. The Seattle Mariners' rookie has taken the league by storm in 2022, and I wouldn't be shocked if he does the same in the Home Run Derby.
6. Corey Seager (+900)
This is a familiar place for Seager, who began his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and playing at Dodger stadium. However, his path could be tough with Rodriguez and then Alonso in his way.
7. Jose Ramirez (+1600)
The last switch-hitter to win a Home Run Derby? Ruben Sierra in 1989. I don't know if Ramirez has the pop to break that streak in 2022.
8. Albert Pujols (+2200)
It would be a feel-good story if Pujols won the Derby, but it's hard to see it happening. He's +275 in the first round alone against Kyle Schwarber, and would need to pull off another upset just to make the final.
