2022 PGA Championship Pool Picks (Best Golfer for Each Tier)
It's the final day before the PGA Championship, and even though I've written about this tournament all week, I still have some things to talk about.
One of my favorite things to do during major golf tournaments, is enter some pools. Whether it's through your job, or family, or friends. It's always fun to pick a few guys and follow them throughout the week.
Because of that, I wanted to give you a few of my favorite pool picks, including golfers who I have picked myself. Most golf pools split players up into "tiers", and then you have to choose one golfer from each tier. So, I've done the same.
Here are my picks for each tier of golfer competing at the PGA Championship, with odds to win courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook.
1st Tier Pick: Rory McIlroy (+1400)
Amongst the top golfers competing this week, I like McIlroy to outshine the likes of Scheffler, Rahm, Spieth, and Thomas. He finished in second place at the Masters in April, and followed it up with a fifth place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship a couple of weeks ago. Not only is he in good form, but his chipping and around-the-green play is amongst the best in the field. If the whispers are true, chipping will be the difference maker this week, and no other golfer at the top of the oddsboard does it better than Rory.
2nd Tier Pick: Xander Schauffele (+2400)
Xander Schauffele is my top pick to win the whole thing, so of course I like him amongst the second tier of golfers. Much like Rory, he's fantastic around the greens and has no real weakness. His putter can let him down at times, but it's been better in recent weeks. He's also been in great form, winning the Zurich Classic alongside Patrick Cantlay, and then following it up with a fifth place finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
3rd Tier Pick: Matt Fitzpatrick (+4000)
Matt Fitzpatrick is a sneaky great play this week. Believe it or not, he ranks first overall in total strokes gained on the PGA Tour this season. Also, if we end up getting some wind and/or rain throughout the weekend, that's when Fitzy thrives. He's 3rd on Tour in scrambling, so in an event that should be tough to score birdies, he'll be amongst the best at limiting bogeys.
4th Tier Pick: Cameron Young (+6500)
If you want to pick someone who enters the event in good form, look no further than Cameron Young. He's coming off back-to-back top three finishes with a T3 at the Wells Fargo and a T2 at the AT&T Byron Nelson. He's also fantastic from tee-to-green, ranking 16th in that area on Tour. If his putter gets hot this week, watch out.
5th Tier Pick: Talor Gooch (+11000)
There are a handful of Oklahoma State golfers competing this weekend, but Talor Gooch is the only one who was born and raised in the state. Nobody in the field has more experience playing Oklahoma golf than Gooch, and it certainly helps that he's one of the best ball strikers on Tour. He ranks 21st in strokes gained: approach, and 7th in strokes gained: around-the-green. I'd recommend strongly considering him as a pick in one of your pools.
Off-The-Board Pick: Adam Hadwin (+30000)
Let's put some respect on Adam Hadwin's name. The Canadian ranks 31st in total strokes gained, but more importantly, he's a wizard around the greens. He ranks 18th in strokes gained: around-the-green, 6th in sand save percentage, and 32nd in scrambling. If you need someone completely off the board to complete your pool, you'll struggle to find a better choice than Adam Hadwin.
