3 Best Pitching Prop Bets for Chris Sale vs. Astros
By Matt De Saro
Game 5 of the ALCS between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros goes down tonight at Fenway Park. Chris Sale gets the start for Boston and will look to help his team bounce back after falling to the Astros in Game 4; tying the series 2-2.
Sale, a once-dominant starter in this league, has seen his role diminish, combining to pitch just 3 ⅔ innings in the playoffs. Those innings have not been kind to the journeyman as he has given up six runs on nine hits in that short span.
So what can we expect from Sale tonight? Redemption or Meltdown?
Let’s take a look at some consensus lines along with props available at WynnBET Sportsbook to try and make a few bucks off Chris Sale's performance tonight.
Best ALCS Game 5 Player Props for Chris Sale
- Chris Sale UNDER 3.5 Strikeouts
- Chris Sale UNDER 14.5 Outs Recorded
- Chris Sale OVER 3.5 hits allowed
Chris Sale UNDER 3.5 Strikeouts
The name Chris Sale used to put fear into the hearts and minds of Major League hitters everywhere. The seven-time All-Star has twice led MLB in strikeouts in 2015 and 2017. In the last few years, however, Sale has not found the success he once had.
His single inning of postseason work in the ALDS should be enough to tell you that. With just one inning of five-run ball against the Rays, Sale will need to be way sharper this time around, and that worry is the basis for my general fade of him in Game 5, especially in the strikeout category. This goes against everything I have ever learned about Sale, but with the limited innings he might see, it will be hard for even him to record five strikeouts. Sale hasn’t pitched into the sixth inning since September 1 and, even then, only recorded three strikeouts.
Sale has gone over this total numerous times on limited work but against the Orioles and Mets. Not the Astros in Game 5 of the ALCS. I expect Sale’s night to be quick and for him to not have time to rack up his usual strikeout numbers.
WynnBET has this number posted at +115 odds for the UNDER.
Chris Sale UNDER 14.5 Outs Recorded
This is another solid bet if you assume that Sale will only pitch a couple of innings. For this prop to go OVER, Sale would have to pitch into the 6th inning and record at least one out. As stated above, Sale hasn’t even managed to make it to the 6th but once in the last month and a half and that was the only time all season he’s managed the feat.
Am I to assume that the Red Sox will be ok leaving Sale out there after a couple of innings of work in such an important game? It's hard to say this about a guy who was so dominant just a few years ago. But I don’t see him sticking around long enough to record the outs needed for this prop to go over.
Chris Sale OVER 3.5 Hits Allowed
Finally, a Chris Sale prop that I think will go over. If the consensus numbers are any indication, I am not alone. Those numbers, right now, have Sale a near-lock to give up at least three hits in the game. Again, were just fading Sale across the board in this game but this prop is a bit trickier. Sale will have to stick around a little bit to record those four hits, a number I think he hits pretty quickly. But, if the Sox see him struggling early as I predict, they might not wait around to yank him from the game.
I am willing to take the chance here even with less than favorable odds to round out these three props for Game 5 of the ALCS.
