3 Free Agent Wide Receivers The Browns Can Sign to Boost Super Bowl Chances
By Matt De Saro
The Cleveland Browns find themselves in a tough spot heading into free agency. They are neither set up to win right now, nor are they broken enough for a rebuild. They're like old cars in some ways. The car still drives, but it backfires, stalls and you need a screwdriver to start it. The parts are there for the Browns to put together a winning team, but they need a lot of help.
In particular, they need a wide receiver or two. For the purposes of this article, I will ignore the fact that I think Baker Mayfield is terrible and focus on players who can help him develop.
With the whole Odell Beckham Jr. saga going down, I do wonder how pumped a top-tier receiver would be to even join this team at all. Additionally, Jarvis Landry is embarrassing himself on social media and might not be long for this team either. Basically, the whole situation is a mess and the Browns need help now. So here are the three guys I think fit best in this program and could help the Browns actually have a good season for a change.
Chris Godwin
Godwin is a free agent after his fifth season as a member of the Bucs. He was franchise-tagged last year and is making just around $16M a year right now. He is expected to earn closer to $20M with the next contract he signs. While Godwin was expected to stay with Tampa Bay, so was Tom Brady. Now that he is gone, and Rodgers signed with GB, the Bucs are left in a weird spot. They have a great team but lack a great quarterback to lead them. This feels like a good time for Godwin to make his exit assuming TB doesn’t get their hands on a top 10 QB somehow.
Allen Robinson
Robinson would be another top-tier option alongside Godwin. And, like Godwin, he is making around $18M a year. However, unlike Godwin, Robinson had an awful 2021-22 season and might be available “on the cheap” due to his slump heading into free agency. Chicago seems to be done with him but Robinson still has a lot to offer the right team. In 2020 he went over 1200 yards, 100 receptions. I think he has some of that magic left if only he can escape the pit of despair that is Chicago football right now.
JuJu Smith-Schuster
A name I keep seeing pop up in rumors with the Browns is Smith-Schuster. While I don’t think he has what it takes to be the savior in Cleveland, he can certainly lend a hand. Because, let's not forget, that there is no guarantee that Landry sticks around this offseason. Even if he does, the Browns need more than talent and JuJu could slide into the No. 2 role behind Landry or any other top option this team signs.
