3 Golfers Who Need Strong Performance at Wyndham Championship to Qualify for FedEx Cup Playoffs
This week’s PGA Tour event, the Wyndham Championship, will once again serve as the final tournament of the regular season before the FedEx Cup Playoffs start with the Northern Trust next week.
With many of the top golfers having already secured their spot in the playoffs, this tournament is all about the players on the bubble who will be competing for their spot in the postseason.
Only the top 125 golfers in the FedEx Cup Standings will qualify for the playoffs and secure their PGA Tour card for next season.
If you value motivation and incentive when deciding who to bet on, than these three big name golfers may tickle your fancy this week,
Rickie Fowler (+5000) - 130th in FedEx Cup Standings
If you’re a casual golf fan, you may be surprised to find out that as of right now, Rickie Fowler is on the outside looking in of the FedEx Cup playoffs. He’s always been a fan favorite and a talented golfer, but he’s struggled in the 2021 season to find a groove.
Fortunately for Fowler fans, he isn’t in danger of losing his PGA Tour card as his win at the 2015 Players Championship has secured his eligibility thru the 2022-2023 season, but he can still miss the FedEX Cup Playoffs for the first time in his career.
Fowler has begun to turn his game around since a T8 finish at the PGA Championship in May, and he can still can back into the top 125 with a solid performance this week. He’s available at +5000 to win at WynnBET, but him finishing in the top 20 at +250 is a much smarter bet.
Tommy Fleetwood (+4000) - 136th in FedEx Cup Standings
Another fan favorite, Tommy Fleetwood will be playing this week for the right to advance to the Northern Trust. Much like Fowler, he’s struggled to find his groove this season, but his biggest detractor has been that he’s only competed in 17 events.
Fleetwood doesn’t have PGA Tour status guaranteed for next season, so there’s some added pressure on him this week. If he isn’t able to get inside the top 125, he’ll have to return to the European Tour. With that being said, his Official World Golf Ranking will still be high enough that he’ll get plenty of opportunities to earn his PGA Tour card back in the 2021-2022 season.
He doesn’t have a top 10 finish in a stroke play event since the Arnold Palmer Invitational back in March. He’s +200 at WynnBET to finish in the top 20 this week.
Rory Sabbatini (+7500) - 141st in FedEx Cup Standings
Rory Sabbatini won the Olympic silver medal for Slovakia just two weeks ago, but unfortunately for him, Olympic medals aren’t worth any FedEx Cup points. The 45-year old is now in danger of missing the playoffs, and he’ll need a strong performance to sneak into the top 125.
If he doesn’t get into the top 125, we will likely see an Olympic medalist compete in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals in an attempt to secure his PGA Tour card for next season that way.
If he fails in both attempts, Sabbatini will likely opt for a one-time “top-50 career money” exemption or the recently created “300-career-made-cut” exemption in order to have some sort of PGA Tour status next season. Both are big benefits for hanging around the big leagues since 1999.
Regardless, if Sabbatini can bring some of that final round magic from the Olympics to the Wyndham Championship, he could be a sneaky play at 75/1 this week. He’s also available at WynnBET at+350 to finish in the top 20, and +750 to finish in the top 10, which could be enough to qualify him for next week’s Northern Trust.
