3 Second Round Matchups to Watch at Wimbledon
A lot has happened in the first two days at Wimbledon. Upsets have already taken place, trick shots have been hit, and unfortunate injuries have become a big story. Due to the rain in London, many of the grass courts were wet. Even when they were deemed suitable for matches, it was still slippery, causing many people to slip and get injured.
Among those who were injured was Serena Williams, who had to retire after injuring her knee in her first round matchup. With Williams out, the women’s side of the bracket is wide open.
As Wimbledon continues, there are great matchups every day. Here are three intriguing matches to turn to in the second round.
All odds listed are via WynnBET.
Alexander Zverev vs Tennys Sandgren
Zverev is off to a great start in London. He won his first round matchup in straight sets, moving on easily to the next round. The only thing he had to worry about was Germany losing to England in the Euros. Zverev is expected to keep that loose energy against Sandgren since his odds to win are set at -1200.
As for the underdog, Sandgren had to work a little harder in his matchup. He dropped the second set, but came out on top in four. Sandgren is a huge underdog at +800, but if he’s able to replicate his play style from the first match, he could take down a giant piece in the Wimbledon bracket.
Elina Svitolina vs Magda Linette
Svitolina is happy to be in the second round after being put on upset alert by Alison Van Uytvanck in her first round matchup. Van uytvanck pushed her to a third set and was fairly even with her for the entire match. Svitolina, one of the higher seeded players, was happy to survive the scare.
Linette, who is a +275 underdog to Svitolina’s -225 odds, is trying to apply the same amount of pressure to Svitolina in her second round matchup, as she’s unranked playing the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Linette lost her first set, but was able to recover and win her first round matchup. If Linette can keep her momentum high, we could be seeing another top five upset on the Women’s side.
Nick Kyrgios vs Gianluca Mager
Nick Kyrgios is one of the most entertaining characters in all of tennis. He’s fun to watch, he hits trick shots, and wears his emotions on his sleeve. Also, when he wants to be, is one of the best tennis players at any given tournament.
Kyrgios won his first match in a fifth set tiebreaker after being down two sets at the end of the third set. Kyrgios is favored against Mager, with -500 odds to advance. Kyrgios isn’t favored to go all the way and win Wimbledon, but each round he plays in instantly becomes more interesting.
