3 Teams that Can Pick Malik Willis in Second Round of 2022 NFL Draft
In what was supposed to be one of the craziest first rounds in NFL Draft history, we saw something that hasn’t happened since before the turn of the millenium. Only one quarterback was taken in the first round. That honor went to Kenny Pickett, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
That left Malik Willis, who was thought to be the best quarterback prospect in this draft, still available. He’s projected to go in the second round, so let’s look at which teams can take him.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings are in purgatory. They are just good enough to be competitive over a season, but aren’t good enough to make a true playoff run. The clock is ticking on the Kirk Cousins era. Drafting Willis would set them up for the future and would give them a young core of Willis, Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook. While it may be early to kick Cousins to the curb, Willis’ upside might be worth the shot.
Seattle Seahawks
Obviously, Drew Lock isn’t the long-term answer in Seattle. The Seahawks need a quarterback and if Baker Mayfield isn’t the one they want, they can start fresh with Willis. Seattle drafted an offensive lineman in the first round, so Willis will have a little bit of protection come this season. With two pick back-to-back, Seattle has the capital to make a move for Willis.
Tennessee Titans
The Titans just traded away A.J. Brown, no longer have Julio Jones and seem to be in line for some regression. While they can’t fully tank with Derrick Henry in his prime, drafting Willis as Ryan Tannehill’s backup could be a sneaky good move. Willis will have time to develop behind a veteran quarterback and even if he does see game action, he’ll have the best running back in the league to help him out. If the Titans foresee a rebuild, they can skip a step by drafting Willis tonight.
