49ers' 2023 Super Bowl Odds Are Surprisingly High
By Matt De Saro
The San Francisco 49ers were considered a fan favorite to win the Super Bowl this season as the No. 6 seed, but were knocked out after falling to the eventual champion L.A. Rams in the NFC Championship game.
Now it's back to the drawing board for Kyle Shanahan and company, but as far as the oddsmakers are concerned, the 49ers may not need to do much offseason work to challenge for a title again in 2023.
In fact, the 49ers are tied for third place in the Super Bowl futures betting market for 2023 according to the opening odds. The 49ers, along with the Bengals and Rams, are +1200 to win it all next year at WynnBET Sportsbook.
San Francisco was a hard team to peg down all year given their uncertainty at the quarterback spot. And now that the year is over, that hasn’t really changed as the most likely scenario is turning to second-year quarterback Trey Lance and trading veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. But the fact remains that they are ranked ahead of better regular season teams from a year ago in the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Green Bay Packers.
I guess this is the professionals' way of saying that it’s time for Kyle Shanahan to take hold of this team and win a Super Bowl after watching his rival, Sean McVay, do the same.
One reason why I’m surprised to see the 49ers here is that we don’t know for sure what kind of quarterback Lance will be. I realize they have morphed into a rushing juggernaut in recent months, but they still need a capable quarterback.
All indications point towards Lance being very impressive on the practice field and “dicing up” the defense in practice. But, as the great Allen Iverson once said, “We're talking about practice.”
This means very little to me in terms of perceived success, especially considering that the reports of playing off the charts came from his own team. Unless the 49ers are able to get back a major difference maker for Garoppolo, the oddsmakers may be a little too generous with where they have San Francisco posted.
