The San Francisco 49ers better wear protection on their knees this weekend, because they’ll be facing Dan Campbell and his knee-biting Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the NFL season.

The Lions are projected to be among the worst teams in the NFL this season. Their win total at WynnBET has been set at a lowly number of '5,' with the under favored at -120. Campbell is entering an undesirable position as a first time head coach with the Lions as the team is entering a rebuilding phase. They traded Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff, and made almost no moves to bolster the league’s worst defense.

The 49ers, on the other hand, will try to bounce back this season after being decimated with injuries in 2020. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team have so many of its top player go down with season-ending injuries like San Francisco had last year.

Time will tell whether or not they can return to their Super Bowl form in 2019, but at least they have a favorable opening week matchup that can ease them into the season.

Here are the odds via WynnBET Sportsbook.

49ers vs. Lions Spread, Odds, and Over/Under

49ers -7.5 (-105)

Lions +7.5 (-115)

49ers -360

Lions +275

45 (OVER -115/UNDER -105)

49ers vs. Lions Prediction and Pick

If you think I’m betting on the lowly Lions in Week 1 of the NFL season, you’re sadly mistaken.

There’s two teams this season that I’m going to avoid betting on if at all possible. One of those teams is the Houston Texans, and the other is the Lions.

In our NFL season preview for the Lions, I wrote about how I think Campbell was a terrible hiring for Detroit. You can’t will your way to victory in the NFL by saying motivational quips and telling your players to play “hard-nosed football.” That might work at the high school level, but not in the NFL in 2021.

Meanwhile, Kyle Shanahan is one of the best coaches in the league right now. His offensive scheme is unmatched, and the amount of motion he uses pre-snap is going to make Campbell’s head spin.

I don’t know if the 49ers can return to their 2019 form, but I certainly think they can handle the Lions in Week 1. I’ll take San Francisco -7.5.
