The Texas A&M Aggies had to settle for a No. 1 seed in the NIT after getting beat by Tennessee in the SEC Championship game. The Aggies needed to win the conference as a bubble team and their failure to do so landed them here, as the biggest fish in the kiddie pool. The Alcorn State Braves find themselves in a similar situation after getting beat by Texas Southern in the SWAC finals.

The Braves are in the NIT based on their regular-season record despite it being barely above .500. While each team has to be bummed about missing out on the NCAA Tournament, a seat at the kiddie table will have to suffice. This is the fourth meeting between these two teams and the Aggies are a perfect 3-0.

Despite their upsetting loss in the SEC Title Game, the Aggies are one of the hotter teams in the nation heading into tournament play. They won seven of their last eight games both straight up and against the spread. This is due in large part to their stellar defensive unit that is holding opponents to an average of 67.3 points per game. Both their scoring offense and defense rank inside the top 125 teams in the nation. I love well-rounded and balanced teams like this. Truth be told, the Braves are also very balanced but their scales are a whole lot smaller. The Braves rank 269th in scoring offense and 210th in scoring defense. 

There is no denying that the Aggies are a much better team. Just refer to the 18.5 points spread in this game if you are not convinced. But this is a ton of points to take on a team that could just be kicking rocks after missing out on the SEC title. I don’t see them losing this game but they are probably dejected from their previous loss and might not come out hot here.
