The Los Angeles Angels are in desperation mode right now after losing nine straight games and falling deep into second place in the AL West. The Houston Astros now have a 7.5-game lead on the Halos and things need to turn around quickly for LA. The Angels get another crack at the Phillies this afternoon after a disastrous opener to this series last night.

The Angels got crushed by the Phillies 10-0 after Kyle Schwarber got the party going by putting the first pitch of the game into the cheap seats. Can the Angels get back in the groove or are their chances of a division title gone?

Angels vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

Assuming the Angels can make it past the first pitch tonight, they have a good shot to get a win here with Michael Lorenzen on the mound. The 30-year-old righty is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 48 innings pitched. His last outing was a bit of a rough one as he gave up three earned against the Blue Jays. But, he went 6 ⅔ innings and left the game in a position to be won. One thing that stands out as a negative for Lorenzen is his K/BB rate of 7/4 in his last two games. Lorenzen has never been a big strikeout guy, but he needs to limit his walks moving forward to avoid any blowouts.

Lorenzen will go head to head against Zack Wheeler who is 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 51 ⅓ innings. Wheeler was impressed in his last start against a very dangerous Mets team where he went six innings of one-run ball.

While I think this game has a chance to be a great pitching duel, the Angels have played awful enough that I can’t reasonably trust them to win. They are 3-6 ATS in their last nine games and I think they will get beat up by Philly again today.

Pick: Phillies -1.5 (+112)
