The Los Angeles Angels hit the road to the Bronx on Tuesday to kick off a three-game series against the first-place New York Yankees. Despite losing their last two games in a row, the Bombers have the second-best record in all of baseball and lead the American League at 33-15. The Angels will have their hands full with New York who appears to be the best bet in the AL to challenge the Dodgers for the World Series this year. Can the return of a New York staple get LA over the hump tonight?

Angels vs. Yankees Prediction and Pick

This game marks the return of Noah Syndergaard to New York for the first time since leaving the Mets. Syndergaard enters with a 4-2 record, 3.08 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP in what has been a surprisingly good debut season with LA. But, this year hasn’t been without some issues and I think Thor runs into another one tonight.

The Yankees bats went quiet in the final two games of their most recent series against the Rays. But, I like their chances to get back on track against Syndergaard despite his solid season. This is partially due to the current Yankees batting a combined .361 against Thor with four RBIs and a home run in 40 at-bats.

Now, just because I think the Yankees do some damage to Syndergaard doesn’t mean I think they are a lock to win this game. Jordan Montgomery will start for the Bombers with a 3.30 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. And while those are fine marks, they are not as impressive as they may seem at glance. The issue here is the quality of teams that Montgomery has been facing. He’s pitched against the Orioles four times already this year for example. Montgomery has also aced the Tigers, Rangers, and Red Sox so far this year. Problem is that the Angels rank eighth in batting average, fifth in runs per game, and second in home runs.

With the short porch at Yankee Stadium, I think LA’s bats put in some work tonight and help to send this game over the predicted total.

Pick: OVER 8.5
