Angels vs. Yankees Prediction and Odds for Wednesday, June 1 (Cortes Bolsters Cy Young Campaign)
By Joe Summers
After a 9-1 New York beatdown last night, the 27-23 Los Angeles Angels have now lost six straight as they try to snap their slump against the 34-15 Yankees tonight at 7:05 p.m. EST.
Reid Detmers is tasked with changing Los Angeles' fortunes. Though he's been inconsistent, the left-handed 22-year-old rookie has flashed enormous potential. He threw a no-hitter against the Rays a few weeks ago, and on the year he has a 2-2 record and 4.65 ERA.
He'll be opposed by Nestor Cortes, who has a 4-1 record and 1.70 ERA. Cortes has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year, having allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his nine starts. He only surrendered three runs in the lone exception, so even his "bad" start was a good one.
Can Cortes stay hot and continue rising up the Cy Young leaderboard or will Detmers and Los Angeles finally get back in the win column?

Angels vs Yankees Prediction and Pick
Listed at +800 to win the American League Cy Young award over at WynnBET, Nestor Cortes has been as dominant as any pitcher in baseball.
He's in the 96th percentile in both expected ERA and expected batting average while ranking second among all pitchers in actual ERA, second in opponent batting average, and third in walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP). The Yankees are 6-1 in Cortes' last seven starts and are well-positioned to notch another victory behind him today.
The Angels' pitching staff is really slumping. In their six-game losing streak, they've allowed an average of 6.14 runs per game. Not a single time in Cortes' nine starts has an opponent reached six runs, so Los Angeles is at a big disadvantage before the first pitch is even thrown tonight.
Reid Detmers should have Angels fans excited, but he's in over his head against a New York lineup that can destroy the baseball. The Yankees lead MLB in home runs per game, and Detmers has given up four in his last two starts. He does a great job limiting base runners, but when he gets hit, he gets hit hard.
And Cortes doesn't allow many hits or get hit hard when he does. He's surrendered four or fewer hits in seven of his nine outings and has a great opportunity to add to his Cy Young resume against a star-studded Angels lineup.
Over their last 19 games as a home favorite, the Yankees are 15-4. Meanwhile, the Angels are 1-5 in their last six as an underdog. Both of those trends continue as Cortes dominates and Detmers gives up one too many long balls.
Pick: Yankees -1.5 (+115)
