There’s nothing quite like Tuesday night Maction, but Thursday night Fun Belt is pretty close. Coastal Carolina still holds the top spot in the Sun Belt conference even after slipping up against Old Dominion in Week 8. Appalachian State still has a chance to work their way to the top of the East Division standings, they are just two games back in the win column.

The Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina are 7-1 and 4-1 in conference play while the App State Mountaineers are 5-3 and 2-2 in conference. Even at 7-1, Coastal is an underdog at home, so let’s check out the odds.

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction and Pick

App State may come in at 5-3, but they are much more battle tested than their Week 10 opponent. Chase Brice and the Mountaineers have played in a 63-61 shootout with North Carolina and beat Texas A&M at Kyle Field, 17-14. They’ve shown the ability to hang around in high scoring games, win close games, and they even converted a hail mary to beat Troy.

In non-conference, Coastal Carolina beat Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Army, all at home. The Chanticleers have also avoided nearly every top team in the Sun Belt so far. We all know that Coastal Carolina was ranked in 2020 and has had some impressive years, but the defense is not the same. In 2020 they finished the year 19th in scoring defense. In 2021 they were 25th. This season, they are 73rd in scoring defense and 98th in total defense.

The offense has fallen off a cliff as well. Even with Grayson McCall still at quarterback, they have gone from fifth in scoring offense last season to 50th so far this year. McCall is completing 68% of his passes for 9.5 average yards with 19 touchdowns and just one interception. Those are great numbers, but last season he was competing 73% and averaging 11.9 yards.

They have become less explosive on offense, much softer on defense and App State is battle tested. The Mountaineers stared down 100,000 strong at Kyle Field on a Saturday, I don’t think a Coastal Carolina blackout on a Thursday night will rattle Chase Brice and his team.

Pick: Appalachian State -3 (-108)
