Ask the Oddsmakers: How Davante Adams’ Status Moves Spread in Packers vs. Cardinals

Davante Adams' status is in doubt for Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Green Bay Packers No. 1 receiver was placed on the COVID-19 list on Monday, which means that it's unlikely he will be able to play on Thursday night against the undefeated Cardinals.

The Packers opened as three-point underdogs, and had been trending towards +4 on Monday morning. However, following the Adam's news, the spread spiked to Arizona -6.

Adams is as important to the Packers as any player outside of Aaron Rodgers, second in receptions and third in receiving yards in the NFL this season, but a two point move is huge for a non-quarterback, and rare.

For what it's worth, it was also announced that the Packers will be without Joe Barry, the team's defensive coordinator after he was also placed on the COVID-19 list.

We spoke with Alan Berg, Senior Trading Manager from WynnBET Sportsbook to hear about Adams' impact on the spread and some key factors to the TNF matchup.

"The unknown with the rest of the Packers’ staff as well as having to go up against the hottest team in the NFL drove up that number," Berg told BetSided. "I can’t remember a wide receiver commanding that much respect. We took some bets on the way up and moved accordingly.”

We know that Adams is as dangerous as any pass catcher in the league, but the move seems a bit overblown. There could be some buyback as kickoff draws closer and the initial wave of bets on Arizona dies down.

For what it's worth, Rodgers is still the quarterback for Green Bay, and I wouldn't rush to fade him. He is 8-1 against the spread in his last nine primetime games, and overall is 21-19-1 ATS as an underdog. Further, under head coach Matt LaFleur, the Packers are 6-2 straight up and ATS as regular season underdogs.
