Ask the Oddsmakers: Will Underdogs Continue to Dominate again in Week 3?
By Ben Heisler
It's been raining dogs so far in the NFL this year!
Through the first two weeks of the NFL season, underdogs have continued to cover at impressive rates; going 21-11 against the spread, as well as 14-18 straight up.
Even Hall of Famer Orlando Pace is jumping on board the underdog train with Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears as 7.5-point road dogs against the Cleveland Browns today. You can watch the full episode of "Big Man Bets" here.
Are oddsmakers are adjusting to the underdogs start to the season?
According to WynnBET Trader Sawyer Johnson, their book has no plans to start adjusting their lines due to the underdogs' hot start.
“We have not adjusted our projections at all based on this trend" Sawyer tells BetSided. "This industry is built on the law of large numbers, so 32 games is not going to fall within that.”
Home Teams Continue to Struggle Since Last Season
Part of the success of underdogs so far in 2021 is actually a reflection of a trend that began last year, where home teams went 127-128 ATS during the 2020 season.
Additionally, Lineups.com points out a notable trend for 0-2 ATS teams. Since 2016, teams that begin the season 0-2 ATS are 26-12 ATS in Week 3. Here are the remaining teams that do not have a win ATS so far this year.
- Chiefs: 1-1, 0-2 ATS
- Jets: 0-2, 0-2 ATS
- Jaguars: 0-2, 0-2 ATS
- Washington Football Team: 1-1, 0-2 ATS
- Falcons: 0-2, 0-2 ATS
Only the Chiefs are favorites today at WynnBET, currently sitting at -7 in a home game against the Los Angeles Chargers. KC has also gone an abysmal 1-11-1 in their last 13 games ATS.
