The Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers kick off a three-game series, the penultimate one before the all-star break for both squads.

So far, the Rangers have been mired in mediocrity, sitting at 39-44 four games out of a wild card spot. Oakland would love to be mediocre, instead they’re simply awful at 29-58 and the only team yet to reach 30 wins.

Tonight, Texas hands the ball to Spencer Howard, while Oakland goes with Adrian Martinez at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Athletics vs. Rangers Prediction and Pick

One of my personal favorite team-building strategies that is employed in MLB is what the Rangers have done. The plan goes something like this:

“Let’s spend 500 million dollars on position players in free agency, that’ll surely make us contenders.” Which is always quickly followed by the, “Oh wait. We forgot that pitchers exist, and now we’re 39-44 with Spencer Howard making his third start with an ERA north of 10.”

I sound bitter and I am because I’ve been dying for the Pirates to sign a Corey Seager or Marcus Semien my entire life. It’s just fun to watch the Rangers or the Angels spend this kind of money and still end up under .500 with my Buccos at the end of the year.

I mentioned Spencer Howard making his third start, well Adrian Martinez is making his fourth for Oakland. Martinez has not been good, but has at least given the A’s a chance to win in two of his starts. That’s more than Howard can say and enough of a reason to ride with the A’s in this one.

Pick: Oakland +1.5 (-135)
