Athletics vs. Tigers Prediction and Odds for Thursday, May 12 (Oakland a Live Underdog)
By Reed Wallach
A pair of clubs that are way off pace in 2022 are looking to get on track against one another.
Both the visiting Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers are several games under and will wrap up their series at Comerica Park on Thursday afternoon.
The A's will hope to get a strong start out of right handed starter James Kaprielian while the Tigers counter with rookie Beau Brieske, who has struggled in his first three starts in the big leagues. Here are the odds for some Thursday day baseball from WynnBET Sportsbook:
Athletics vs. Tigers Odds, Run Line, Total
Run Line:
- Athletics: +1.5 (-200)
- Tigers: -1.5 (+170)
Moneyline:
- Athletics: +115
- Tigers: -125
Total: 7 (Over -115/Under -105)
Athletics vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick
Both these pitchers have been bad this year, no doubt about it, but there's some room for upside here from Kaprielian. The A's starter has a 5.87 ERA, but his FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) is more than 1 run lower at 4.80, meaning that he is in line for some positive regression on balls in play.
Kaprielian's biggest issue has come with his command. He has walked six batters in his first two starts of the season (7.2 innings) but that may not be as big of an issue with the Tigers incredibly low walk rate, which is 19th in all of baseball.
While there may be some better starts on the way for the Oakland right hander, the same can't be said for the rookie Brieske. He has taken his lumps in his early big league career, allowing seven runs in 15 innings pitched, but it should much worse. That mark translates to a 4.20 ERA, but his FIP is nearly double at 7.63, meaning that Brieske is the product of lucky variance in the field.
Brieske is struggling to find his punch out pitch, walking nearly as many batters as he is striking out and I can't back him as a favorite.
LEAN: Athletics ML +115
