The A’s inexplicably swept the Astros in a three-game series in Oakland to bring them to 38-63, the second worst record in baseball. The White Sox are an even .500 at 49-49 and 3.5 games out of the final wild-card spot and three games behind Minnesota for the top spot in the AL Central.

Chicago will try to put themselves over the .500 mark for good and they kick off this series with Lance Lynn on the mound against Oakland. The A’s turn to James Kaprielian to keep their winning ways going.

Athletics vs. White Sox Prediction and Pick

Lance Lynn might finally be turning his awful season around for the White Sox. His last outing he went six scoreless against Cleveland. It seems like he has figured it out, but the bad news for Chicago is we have seen this before from Lynn. Back on June 1, Lynn made his fourth start of the year and went six scoreless with just three hits. Nearly an identical stat line to his last outing on July 23.

June 1 was not a turning point and July 23 won’t be either. Lynn has a 4.29 expected ERA, which is still better than his 6.43 ERA, but isn’t a sign of a turnaround. His fastball does have a high whiff rate around 37%, but a run value of 1. His fastball run value over the past three years has been -16, -6, and -32. In 2019 it was easily one of the best pitches in baseball.

I need to see more than one scoreless outing before I believe Lynn is back to his vintage self. That’s why Oakland might have a chance to if not win, keep this one close.

Pick: Athletics +1.5 (-125)
