We are now two months into the 2023 MLB season, so we're starting to get a pretty good idea of which teams are contenders and which are pretenders.

We also have a solid sense of what teams we should absolutely avoid at the betting window.

This year, the team we all need to avoid betting on is, unsurprisingly, the Oakland Athletics. Sure, we all know that the organization has been a dumpster fire all season and is now virtually locked in to move to Las Vegas in the coming years, but just exactly how bad of a bet they've been still might surprise you.

According to Joe Osborne on Twitter, they've lost their bettors almost double the amount of money than the next worst team.

Athletics are worst bet in baseball

That's right. The Athletics have lost their bettors a total of 29.2 units so far this season. The next closest team is the Kansas City Royals, who have lost bettors 15.8 units.

That means if you blindly bet $100 on every Athletics game this season, you'd be down $2,920!!

So, even if you're seeing long underdog odds on Athletics, you may still want to stay away for the time being. Even as big time underdogs, there seems to be absolutely no value in betting on Oakland.

Orioles most profitable team in baseball

On the flip side of things, the Baltimore Orioles lead the Majors in profit at +10.9 units. That means, if you blindly bet $100 on them in every game this season, you'd be up around $1,090.

It's a perfect illustration of why the best records don't always translate to the highest profitability. The Orioles have the second best record in baseball as of writing this article at 34-19, but are much more profitable than the Rays, who are sitting at 39-16.

That means that the Orioles' odds to win games are set at a longer number on average than the Rays. Still, the Rays are the fifth most profitable team in baseball at +7.7 units.

But, the second most profitable team is the Detroit Tigers, who actually have a losing record at 25-26. Don't let the Athletics scare you away from betting on bad teams. Sometimes, there's plenty of value in doing exactly that.

But, the A's aren't that team. Stay far away until further notice.
