Baker Mayfield's Agent Reveals Timeline for Contract Extension
By Peter Dewey
Former No. 1 overall pick and Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is looking to cash in on a contract extension before the team begins the 2021 NFL season.
Mayfield led the Browns back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, and the team upset the Pittsburgh Steelers before eventually falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.
Mayfield has finally brought a winning culture back to Cleveland, and he certainly wants to maximize his potential earnings by signing an extension after the best season of his young career.
Mayfield’s agent, Jack Mills, spoke about a timeline in which a potential deal could get done.
“We’re not going to be dragging it out,” Mills told TheLandOnDemand.com. “I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap isn’t going up this year but it’s going up next year and next.
“We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal.”
Browns fans will love that Mayfield and his camp want a deal done as soon as possible, as that would not only ensure the quarterback’s future, but it would avoid a potentially messy contract situation before the 2022 campaign.
“But I think something will be done this summer,” Mills said. “As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control.”
The ball is in the Browns’ court and Cleveland would be wise to keep Mayfield happy after he threw for 26 touchdowns and a career-low eight interceptions in his first season under head coach Kevin Stefanski.
WynnBET views the Browns as a playoff team once again this season, as Cleveland has -230 odds to reach the postseason for the second straight year. The Browns are expected to build on their 11-5 campaign from the 2020 season, as they’re projected to win 10.5 games in 2021 even though the over (+110) is a slight underdog.
With defensive additions such as Jadeveon Clowney and John Johnson III, and the return of Odell Beckham Jr. from injury, the Browns could be a serious contender in the AFC.
As long as Mayfield is their quarterback, the Browns seem to be on a path to success for years to come.
