Baltimore Orioles One of Baseball's Best Bets in May
By Ben Heisler
The Baltimore Orioles were projected to win 61.5 games in 2022; dead last in Major League Baseball.
Now, they've become baseball's best bet in the month of May.
Perhaps there's a little Orioles magic in the air. Following their 5-3 road win against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night, Baltimore improved to 13-17 on the season, and 7-3 on the moneyline in their last 10 games. They also rank fifth in all of baseball on the run line this year at 18-12-0, and are 8-2 on the run line over their last 10.
Only the Houston Astros have won more games in May, going 9-1 on the moneyline, but just 6-3 on the run line following three straight one-run wins against the Detroit Tigers between May 5 and May 7.
Can the Orioles Keep Up This Pace?
It's important to note that this is still a team 8.5-games back of the 21-8 New York Yankees in the AL East. After all, WynnBET Sportsbook still has the O's at 200/1 to win the AL Pennant, and 500/1 to win the World Series; both tied for last in each category.
But considering that through the first 30 games, the Orioles are already approaching 1/4 of their projected win total for the season remains noteworthy.
Baltimore ranks seventh in pitching wins-above-replacement (WAR) over at Fangraphs this season. And that ranking doesn't include the dominant outing from rookie right-hander Kyle Bradish, striking out 11 Cardinals last night through seven innings; giving up just two runs and walking none.
Their pitching resurgence is even more remarkable considering they lost their best pitcher, left-hander John Means to Tommy John surgery a few weeks into April.
They also sport one of the most dominant bullpens in the league. Only the New York Yankees have a higher bullpen WAR in the AL than the Orioles this season.
The O's continue their series against the Cardinals this evening from Busch Stadium in St. Louis. They enter the matchup at WynnBET Sportsbook as +195 moneyline underdogs and +1.5 on the run line (-105).
