Best College Football Teams Against the Spread Heading into Week 11
By Matt De Saro
It's time for Week 11 of the College Football season and at this point, we have a good understanding of most teams in the nation. As we continue to pick games heading down the stretch, I thought we could review some college football records. Specifically, teams who have been very good against the spread (ATS) in 2021. While no FBS team has a perfect ATS record, some are close. ATS records aren’t gospel when it comes to whether or not a team will cover a game or not. But, they do offer valuable information.
With that in mind, let's take a look a the top 3 ATS records in Division 1 college football.
Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners: 8-1 ATS
The Roadrunners are one of four FBS programs to remain unbeaten straight up (SU) and the only one on this list. This is particularly impressive and shows that sportsbooks continue to underestimate UTSA.
Despite their undefeated season, UTSA is No. 23 in the nation due to their cupcake schedule when compared with the other undefeated programs who are all ranked in the top 8. The Roadrunners' only ATS loss came to UNLV as 21.5-point favorites in a game they won by seven. The schedule from here on out is pretty weak so UTSA should continue to dominate.
Syracuse Orange: 8-1 ATS
In stark contrast to UTSA, the Syracuse Orange are just barely above .500 with a 5-4 overall record. This is important to note due to the fact that Syracuse is one of the most profitable ATS teams in the nation and might miss a bowl game.
Its only ATS loss came against Rutgers as 2.5 point underdogs in a game they dropped by double digits. Syracuse faces the Louisville Cardinals in Week 11 who are 4-5 against the spread. WynnBET Sportsbook has the Orange as 3.0-point road dogs and could be a great chance to continue rewarding Orange bettors.
Michigan Wolverines: 7-2 ATS
Technically, Michigan is tied for the third spot with Oklahoma State and Pittsburgh. Yet since it's the highest-ranked of the bunch, we’re going to focus on the Wolverines here.
The Wolverines are also the highest-ranked team on this list and the only one in contention for a national championship -- though their chances are slim.
So far the only two teams to steal a cover from the Wolverines are Rutgers and Michigan State. Both of these games saw Michigan close as favorites. Michigan failed to cover as 20.0 favorites to Rutgers and outright lost to MSU as four-point favorites.
As the Wolverines head into a treacherous part of their schedule, it should be noted that Michigan has yet to cover against a ranked team this season.
