Best NRFI and YRFI Bets Today (Expect Lineups to Be Rusty)
By Joe Summers
I feel like a kid excited for the Tooth Fairy. We've had to patiently wait three whole days for MLB action to return, but I've slept well knowing I'll wake up tomorrow with loads of cash under the pillow.
We've waited long enough, though. It's time for instant gratification and some No Run First Inning (NRFI) / Yes Run First Inning (YRFI) bets.
Yesterday, I recapped the best NRFI/YRFI teams through the first half of the season. The Marlins and Giants both play today after posting excellent NRFI results thus far. Spoiler Alert: I'm picking history to repeat itself.
Using odds from WynnBET Sportsbook (aka the Tooth Fairy), let's check out my favorite NRFI/YRFI bets of the slate:
Best NRFI and YRFI Bets Today
Rangers vs Marlins NRFI (-135)
The Marlins are tied for the best NRFI record (52-39) and I expect that mark to improve with Pablo Lopez taking on Texas' Jon Gray.
Lopez is dominant, especially at home with a 2.35 ERA, and hasn't allowed a first inning run in three straight starts. The Rangers struggle against right-handed pitchers, while Gray should limit a Marlins squad that scores in the opening frame at the second-worst rate in MLB (17.58%).
Tigers vs Athletics Game 2 NRFI (-140)
Frankie Montas has just a couple of starts left to showcase his talents to a contender prior to the trade deadline, and if he wants to escape Oakland he'll be fully focused against Detroit. He's got a 2.38 ERA at home, allowing two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts there.
Meanwhile, Garrett Hill was impressive in his first start against the Guardians, holding them to two hits over six innings. He struggled against the White Sox, but held his opponents to one combined run in his last three minor league starts and Oakland's lineup belongs in the minors anyway.
I have no faith in Detroit to score on Montas, and I've got even less faith in the Athletics. The NRFI is the play here as well.
Giants vs Dodgers NRFI (-120)
The Giants are another extremely profitable NRFI team and they've got their ace, Carlos Rodon, on the bump tonight.
Rodon is on an absurd stretch, allowing one run or fewer in six of his last seven starts, and held his opponent to two runs or fewer in 15 of his 18 outings overall.
Mitch White isn't on Rodon's level, but he's got a 2.25 first inning ERA and the Giants score in the opening frame less than 25% of the time. I'll keep the NRFI train chugging in the final game of the slate.
