The Seattle Mariners kicked their season into high gear and are riding an impressive seven-game winning streak with just three losses in their last 15 games. As a result, the Mariners climbed into second place in the AL West. While that is great, they are still 12 games behind the Astros and need to keep playing at a high level if they have even a slight chance to catch them.

While the Blue Jays are all the way down in fourth place in the AL East, they are having a winning year at 45-41. They just happen to play in a division with the Yankees who are a runaway train 15 games in first place. Toronto hasn’t done themselves any favors with a 2-8 record in their last 10 games.

Blue Jays vs. Mariners Prediction and Pick

While these two teams match up well, there are some significant differences between the two. Obviously, the recent success of Seattle compared with the struggles of Toronto needs to be considered. But, the Mariners also have a significant edge on the mound with Logan Gilbert starting.

Gilbert enters this game tied for third place in the MLB with a 10-3 record, 12th in ERA at 2.61, and 27th in WHIP at 1.15. Gibert struggled in two of his last three games but bounced back on Tuesday to beat a dangerous San Diego Padres team. Gilbert held the Friars to one run on six hits over 5 ⅓ innings to give himself a 1.69 ERA in July.

Gilbert will be facing off against Max Castillo (0-0) who brings a 2.38 ERA and 0.79 WHIP into this start. While those numbers are fantastic, it's important to point out that Castillo has only pitched 11 ⅓ innings this year. All of which were out of the bullpen in relief. Considering he’s a rookie, by my count that makes tonight his first MLB career start. They also just announced this about 30 minutes ago so I doubt Castillo had a ton of advanced notice about this decision.

Considering we have a game between two well-matched teams, the outcome will hinge on how well Castillo plays today. I’m not going to say that he will get beat up in this spot, but I don’t think he’s going to do much to slow down the streaking Mariners.

PICK: Mariners -1.5 (+165)
