Blue Jays vs. Rays Prediction and Odds for Saturday, May 14th (Back Tampa Bay as Home Favorites)
By Reed Wallach
Two AL East foes continue their weekend series on Saturday night with question marks on the mound.
The Tampa Bay Rays took the first of a 3 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, setting up a Saturday night pitching matchup between a pair of lefties in Hyun Jyun Riu of the Blue Jays and Ryan Yarbrough of the Rays. Both pitchers have battled injuries to start the season and have struggled in limited work, let's see if we can find some betting value.
Here are the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook:
Blue Jays vs. Rays Odds, Run Line, Total
Run Line:
- Blue Jays: +1.5 (-180)
- Rays: -1.5 (+150)
Moneyline:
- Blue Jays: +110
- Rays: -120
Total: 8.5 (Over +100/Under -120)
Blue Jays vs. Rays Prediction and Pick
It's fair to question both pitchers form heading into this matchup.
We'll start with Ryu, who has been knocked around in his small sample this season. He has allowed 11 hits in 7.1 innings, yielding 11 runs on 2 homers. The former Cy Young candidate is far from his best self and will now face a Rays team that is 7th in batting average against southpaws.
On the other end is the versatile Yarborough, who has also pitched only 7.1 innings and walked 4 batters in that small period. Typically, known for his control, Yarborough needs to stay out of trouble against a dangerous Blue Jays lineup that can also hit left handed pitching well, 9th in batting average.
In a game that has some question marks, I'm going to give the edge to the Rays. The team has the far superior bullpen, just outside the top 10 in unit ERA while the Jays have the 6th highest. If both pitchers struggle against formidable lineups and this becomes a pen game, I'll side with the home team.
LEAN: Rays ML -120
