The magic number still sits at one game for the Atlanta Braves who failed to officially clinch the NL East last night with a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. It appears they may have gone out to celebrate a little prematurely in South Beach before handling their business. The Mets game was postponed, so the Braves simply need one win or one Mets loss to break out the champagne and avoid a three-game series prior to the NLDS.

Jake Odorizzi takes the mound for the Braves in pretty poor form as of late, and he will be opposed by Braxton Garrett.

Braves vs. Marlins Odds, Run Line and Total

Run line:

  • Braves -1.5 (-102)
  • Marlins +1.5 (-118)

Moneyline:

  • Braves -172
  • Marlins +144

Total:

  • 8 (Over -102/Under -120)

Braves vs. Marlins Prediction and Pick

The Marlins won all of Garrett’s three starts in September and now, in 16 starts this year, he has worked his ERA down to 3.56 with 83 strikeouts and 19 walks in 83.1 innings. He has been an impressive pitcher from the left side at just 25-years-old, and along with Luzardo who went last night, is a great foundational piece for this Miami rotation going forward.

The Marlins have won three in a row on the back of good pitching and Bryan De La Cruz. He had a two-run homer last night, part of a three hit, three RBI night and for the past week he has a 1.129 OPS. It’s starting to feel like the Marlins could fend off the division title celebration for another day, especially against Odorizzi.

Odorizzi has not been what Atlanta hoped for when they acquired him from Houston and it’s clear why he was the odd man out of the Astros rotation. His ERA has ballooned up to 4.53 and the Braves are 3-6 in his nine starts since being acquired.

I tend to lean towards Miami as an underdog tonight, but with how bad their offense is, they have a team OPS under .600 over the past week, the under is by far the best play.

Pick: Under 7.5 (+100)
