It’s amazing how much difference a day can make. Or, in this case, a pitch. The Philadelphia Phillies' entire season got turned on its head over the weekend when Blake Snell hit Bryce Harper in the left thumb with a 97 mph heater. The streaking Phils will now be without the reigning NL MVP for the foreseeable future.

Today, we will get to see what the Phillies can do without their best offensive player when they run into the reigning World Series champion Atlanta Braves. Lucky for them, the Braves have a real problem on the mound today by the name of Charlie Morton.

Can the likes of Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins step up or will the Braves take this series opener on the road?

Here are the odds for this game with odds from consensus sportsbooks.

Braves vs. Phillies Odds, Run Line, and Total

Run Line

  • Braves: +1.5 (-200)
  • Phillies: -1.5 (+165)

Moneyline:

  • Braves: +106
  • Phillies: -116

Total:

  • Total 7.5 (Over -115/Under -105)

Braves vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

Despite being down an MVP, the Phillies are still favored at home today. The reason for this is Morton who, as I mentioned above, is a liability on the mound for Atlanta most nights. With just one win in his last six starts and a 4.84 ERA, Morton does not inspire a ton of confidence.

He has been a bit better in June I must admit. But, his career numbers against this lineup are not great with a .263 batting average and a .764 OPS. Even without Harper, the Phillies are a team that could knock Morton out of this game early.

Reason No. 2 for the Braves to be underdogs here is Zack Wheeler. The Phillies’ starter today has been great this year with a 2.77 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. We missed with him and Philly last week after taking a tough loss to the Rangers. But he only gave up two runs and the loss was more on the Phillies' offense than anything.

Wheeler’s career numbers against this Braves lineup are solid with a .193 batting average and .504 OPS in 181 at-bats.

Harper’s loss is massive for the Phillies. His absence takes away a lot of offensive production from this team. And I think in the long run, this moment will be the beginning of the end of their playoff hunt.  However, for today, I think they have a leg up and will take them to earn a tough road win over this division rival.

Pick: Phillies -116 to Win
