The Milwaukee Brewers sit two games outside of the NL's final Wild Card spot with just a few weeks left in the regular season. Every contest is critical at this point, and the Brewers find themselves favorites on the road against the Colorado Rockies today.

Eric Lauer gets the call this afternoon with a 4.03 ERA on the road. He threw 6.2 strong innings against Arizona in his last start but took the loss when Milwaukee's offense couldn't muster any run support.

Colorado's lineup is struggling itself, scoring three runs or fewer in seven of the Rockies' last nine games. Kyle Freeland allowed only three runs total in his previous two outings, though his 6.10 ERA at Coors Field is cause for concern.

Can Colorado play spoiler or will Milwaukee's playoff hopes live to fight another day?

Let's take a peak at the consensus odds before diving into the matchup:

Brewers vs Rockies Odds, Run Line and Total

Run Line

  • Brewers -1.5 (+104)
  • Rockies +1.5 (-124)

Brewers vs Rockies Prediction and Pick

The Colorado Rockies have five straight losses behind Kyle Freeland, but this is a great bounce-back spot for the 29-year-old lefty. He's surrendered three runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts, and Milwaukee's lineup struggles against southpaws.

Overall, the Brewers have been terrible in this spot of late. They're 4-8 in their last dozen games as road favorites, and I see little reason to trust Eric Lauer. In six of Lauer's last nine outings, he's compiled an expected FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) above 4.93, which would be the worst mark in MLB over the full season.

Freeland's best start of the season came against these Brewers back in July, as he threw seven shutout innings with just four hits and one walk to seven strikeouts. I expect a similar performance and like the value on the Rockies against a struggling opponent.

Back Colorado to improve to 14-10 in its last 24 games as home underdogs as Lauer succumbs to the unfriendly conditions of Coors Field.

Pick: Rockies (+120)
