Bubba Watson Is Solid Dark Horse to Win Travelers Championship
By Peter Dewey
There may not be a course on the PGA Tour that Bubba Watson enjoys playing more than TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, the home of the Travelers Championship.
Watson will be looking for his fourth career win at the Travelers Championship, but he is a bit of a dark horse to win this year’s tournament.
WynnBET has Watson’s odds to win at +4000, but it’s hard to deny the success he has had at TPC River Highlands in his career. Watson’s last win at the event came in 2018, when he shot 17-under to win by three strokes.
Watson’s previous win at TPC River Highlands had come in 2015, so if he wants to keep his pace of winning the tournament once every three years, 2021 would follow that pattern.
In his career, Watson has shown that he plays well at courses that fit his game. He’s a two-time winner at the Northern Trust, a two-time winner at the Masters and the aforementioned three wins at the Travelers.
"It's absolutely amazing," Watson said after his 2018 win. "I can't really put it into words. [The Travelers] is almost like a second home. The fans here, the sponsor here, everybody treats me so good. To do this in front of this huge crowd, pretty special.”
While Watson hasn’t won a tournament this year, he has been playing some better golf coming into the Travelers Championship. He finished tied for eighth at the Zurich Classic back in April, and followed that with two other top-20 finishes at the Valspar Championship (T13) and Wells Fargo Championship (T18).
He finished 50th at the US Open this past weekend, but was 3-under par through the first two rounds before struggling on the weekend.
If anyone knows how to win at TPC River Highlands, it’s Bubba, and his odds are providing some great value heading into Thursday’s first round.
