No. 13 BYU travels to Logan, Utah to take on Utah State in another edition of college football on a Friday night.

The Cougars have put together a strong resume this season behind two wins over PAC-12 competition, but have some quarterback questions with Jaren Hall battling an injury that kept him out last week.

The home team has been feisty so far this year, also beating a PAC-12 team in Week 1, but struggled last week at home against Boise State. Utah State does boast an explosive offense that will look to shock BYU and foil their perfect season.

BYU vs. Utah State Trends

  • Utah State is 3-1 ATS this season
  • BYU is 0-2 ATS as a favorite this season
  • BYU is 7-8 as a road favorite under Kalani Sitake

I jumped on this over 58.5 when it opened, but it has since steamed up two points over 60.5. Of course, I’m less interested in the number, but I do see value in two these two offenses having a big Friday night.

Let’s start with the home team, one I have been fond of as a live underdog this season. Utah State’s offense is top 20 in both rushing and passing explosiveness while running the 10th most plays in the country. It’s clear what first year head coach Blake Anderson wants to do and it revolves around pushing the pace and getting the ball down the field.

While BYU has limited teams such as Utah and Arizona State to below 20 points, both were at home and had some turnover luck to help suppress their opponents scoring. On the road, against a team that likes to play fast, I think we see points early and often.

This total seems a bit watered down due to the final result of the Boise State game last week, a 27-3 loss, but if you dig deeper, the Aggies had some brutal breaks in that one, going 0-for-3 in the red zone in the first half and missing two field goals.

However, Utah State’s defense is going to have trouble against BYU’s offense that is expected to have Jaren Hall back this week. Hall has been electric as a runner especially this season, but sat out the South Florida game last week with bruised ribs.

Hall is expected to play, and he should find success against a USU defense that is allowing nearly 6.5 yards per play and more than five yards a carry.

I remain interested in Utah State as underdogs because I believe they can find success on this defense and make BYU play to their pace at home, but instead of backing the spread I’m interested in the total in what should be an entertaining Friday night matchup.
