Cardinals vs. Cubs prediction and odds for Sunday, July 23 (Chicago undervalued at home)
By Reed Wallach
The Cardinals and Cubs wrap up a weekend series at Wrigley Field with both teams playing well out of the All-Star break.
Both teams are above .500 over each of its last 10 even though both teams are way out of NL Central contention. The two will wrap up a weekend series on Sunday with the Cardinals starting left hander Jordan Montgomery facing off against Chicago starter Jameson Taillon.
Here are the odds for Sunday's matchup:
Cardinals vs. Cubs odds, run line and total
Cardinals vs. Cubs prediction and pick
Taillon has struggled in Chicago in his first season, posting a 6.05 ERA. However, he's been a bit unlucky with some negative variance, considering his xERA is 5.31 and his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is 4.92. He will face a formidable Cardinals lineup, but I'm a believer in Taillon's underlying metrics and that he will be able to overcome some of his poor luck.
Meanwhile, the Cubs offense is in a good spot against Montgomery, the team is 11th in batting average against southpaws. Chicago touched up Montgomery in its only meeting this season, scoring six runs against him across five innings.
While Taillon's numbers look poor, the matchup is favoring the Cubs. I'll back them as home underdogs.
