The Miami Marlins are set to host the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of a three-game set at LoanDepot Park. The Cardinals enter this game as the NL Central leaders with a 5-3 record to start the season. They are coming off a series at Milwaukee where they split games with the Brewers. Despite not getting a series win, their offense scored a combined 17 runs in the final three games.

The Marlins are 4-5 entering this series and coming off a big 11-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. Miami took three of four from the Phillies and held them to three or fewer runs in three of four games.

Cardinals vs. Marlins Prediction and Pick

The Cardinals will give the ball to Adam Wainwright to make his third start of the season. Wainwright was lights-out in his first start, throwing six scoreless innings against the Pirates. The Brewers had better luck with four runs in 4 ⅓ innings. But Wainwright still managed to strike out seven while walking two. Jesús Luzardo will take the hill for Miami after a phenomenal season debut. Luzardo went five innings against the Angels, giving up two hits and one earned run while striking out 12.

While the pitching appears to be evenly matched in this game, the Cardinals have a much better offense right now. St. Louis is averaging 5.38 runs per game on offense while the Marlins' average is 4.33. Thanks to their offense, the Cardinals are on a 3-0 run against the runline and have covered five of their nine games this year so far.

I am curious to see if Wainwright returns to his opening day form or has another rough game on the mound. I am leaning toward the former and will take a chance on the Cardinals to win as slight road favorites.

Pick: Cardinals ML
