Can Max Scherzer win his fourth Cy Young? He may be putting together a formidable resume.

The Mets star has been fantastic in his first handful of starts with his new ball club and will look to give them a big push against a formidable roster in the St. Louis Cardinals. Scherzer has not missed a beat since signing with New York, posting a 2.66 ERA this season.

How will he match up against the Cards, who are countering with converted starter, flame throwing Jordan Hicks, on Wednesday? Let's check out the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook:

Cardinals vs. Mets Odds, Run Line, Total

Run Line:

  • Cardinals: +1.5 (-140)
  • Mets: -1.5 (+115)

Moneyline:

  • Cardinals: +170
  • Mets: -185

Total: 7 (Over -110/Under -110)

Cardinals vs. Mets Prediction and Pick

Scherzer has been dominant this season, including against St. Louis, striking out 10 batters in 7 shutout innings in a 5-2 Mets win back on April 25th. The Mets ace has been as good as advertised and I see no reason why he can't show up yet again against this St. Louis team.

However, I'm not interested in betting the full game total as New York used a bullpen game in one of the two doubleheader meetings that the team had against the Cards on Tuesday. If Scherzer is going to give 7 effective innings, there is a chance that a taxed bullpen can lead to a blowup late in the game.

On the other side, Hicks enters as a bit of a question mark but there is no denying his talent. He is a converted reliever that has a fastball that sits well above 100 miles per hour. He has been stretched out over his last two outings, going more than 4 innings in each after pitching no more than 3 innings in his prior 5 starts, but I do question just how long he will go. I have a similar concern about a taxed Cardinals pen as I do about the Mets.

That leads me to my favorite bet in this one on the first 5 under 3.5. Despite some juice on the under, I believe this minimizes any lingering effects from the doubleheader on Tuesday and allows me to back a superstar in Scherzer on the mound.

LEAN: UNDER 3.5 (-120)
