Kemba Walker is out and Dennis Schroder reportedly is in at point guard for the Boston Celtics

Boston made a savvy move on Tuesday night, reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with Schroder for just the $5.9 million Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception.

Schroder, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, had rejected a four-year, $84 million extension offer from the Lakers during the 2020-21 season in hopes of landing a bigger deal this offseason.

That didn’t come to fruition, and Boston swooped in to grab the veteran guard on a cheap one-year pact. While Schroder didn’t put up the same numbers as Walker last season, he was much healthier, appearing in 61 games for the Lakers.

Despite the move, and the Celtics desperate need to find a point guard, WynnBET has kept the Celtics’ odds to win the NBA title at +5000 for the next season.

Schroder isn’t a superstar, but he was a Sixth Man of the Year candidate back in the 2019-20 season and finished last year averaging 15.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from 3.

Boston could have done a lot worse at point guard, as Payton Pritchard and Kris Dunn were next in line behind Marcus Smart in the rotation.

If Schroder can have a year like he did with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2019-20 campaign, where he averaged 18.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while shooting a career-high from the field (46.9 percent) and from 3 (38.5 percent), Boston should reap the benefits.

The oddsmakers at WynnBET have moved the lines for the New York Knicks (+10000 to +4000) and Chicago Bulls (+7500 to +4000) following their offseason moves, and while the Bulls did sign DeMar DeRozan, neither team brought in a true superstar player.

Boston may not see the same boost from Schroder now, but they could be a value pick if he finds his 2019-20 self this coming season.
