Among all football conferences in Division 1, Conference USA just might present the most parity of all of them. Nine different teams have appeared in the Conference Championship Game since 2011, and no team has won it more than twice. Only Charlotte, FIU, Old Dominion, UTEP, and UTSA have yet to make an appearance.

The UAB Blazers were the conference champions in the shortened 2020 campaign, and they’ll attempt to become the first school to win the C-USA Championship Game for a third time this season.

Oddsmakers Predict a 2020 Championship Game Rematch

UAB bested Marshall in 2020 in the C-USA Championship Game, beating them 22-13. The two teams once again sit atop the oddsboard, which means we could see a rematch of the game in 2021.

This time, it’s Marshal who’s set as the slight betting favorite at +240. Marshall has appeared in the conference championship game three times, with its win coming in 2014 against Louisiana Tech.

Marshall got off to a fast start in 2020, starting its season 7-0, before dropping its last three including a 17-10 loss to Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day.

The Thundering Herd will likely boast the top quarterback in the conference this season, as Grant Wells is back for another year along with three of his top five receivers from 2020. Marshall’s defense will once again prove to be strong in 2021. It allowed only 13 points per game last season.

UTSA Has Chance at First Championship Game Berth

If UAB isn’t able to repeat as champions in the West Division, UTSA will be in a fantastic spot to advance to the Conference Championship Game for the first time in school history. UTSA has only been a Division 1 FBS program since 2011, and it has built up a respectable reputation since then.

Second year head coach Jeff Traylor will be leading a team that will be returning the bulk of its starters from last season.

The Road Runners finished at 5-2 in the West Division last season, and if they can improve on that mark in 2021, they could very well overtake UAB for the top spot in the division.
