Conference USA Tournament Bracket and Standings
The Conference USA Tournament gets started on Tuesday with a pair of games between the four last place teams. As the odds indicate, they stand close to no chance considering the upper class of the league is legitimately dangerous to win a game or two in the NCAA Tournament and these teams struggled in league play.
North Texas, last year's winner, as well Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State and UAB all clinched double byes and are not in action until Thursday.
Conference USA Tournament Prediction and Pick
North Texas is the slight favorite over UAB and I agree with that assessment. The team did lose to the Blazers on Jan. 6, but that was the last time the Mean Green, who bolster the 20th best defense in the country according to KenPom, before Saturday in a two-point road loss at UTEP.
I'm not going to change my perception of UNT off of that one loss, who have the best unit on the floor at all times. I give the nod to them as the rightful chalk especially with their path, given that they beat their semifinal opponent Western Kentucky by five on the road.
UAB is more than capable of beating UNT, they split the season series, but the Blazers have to deal with our dark horse...
PICK: North Texas +160
Conference USA Tournament Dark Horse
I mentioned how difficult it will be for the longshots to make a serious run in this league, but Louisiana Tech profiles as a dark horse at +1000. While they have dropped of their last three to UNT and UAB, I believe that this team is rock solid on both sides of the floor and has the best 2-point defense in the league.
Overall, they have the second best defense in the conference and has a game breaking freshman in 6'7" 275 pound freshman Kenneth Lofton. The team actually checks out quite nicely according to ShotQuality, ranking 80th in that metric with the 51st best Rim & 3 Rate.
Meanwhile a potential semifinal matchup against North Texas can be intriguing as the Mean Green are bottom 20 nationally in free throw percentage. For what it's worth, La Tech closed as 5.5 point underdogs on the road, meaning they would be about 2.5 or 3 point underdogs in the semifinals if they get past WKU in the quarters.
PICK: Louisiana Tech +1000
