Mercedes has won eight-straight Formula 1 Constructors Championships, and Lewis Hamilton has been synonymous with winning for the better part of a decade.

Now, all of a sudden, it's only three races into the 2022 Formula 1 season and Mercedes is +500 at WynnBET to win the Constructors Championship and Lewis Hamilton is +900 to win the Drivers Championship.

So is now a good time to invest in Mercedes from a betting stand point? It may seem tempting, but I would advise against it.

What Happened to Mercedes?

It's not a matter of a few bad races, or something that can be a quick fix for Mercedes. They're suffering from an issue that they may not be able to overcome this season.

The reason for their troubles, is something called "the bouncing problem", also known as "porpoising".

In short, the new technical regulations that have been implemented in Formula 1 this season have brought back an old phenomenon called "ground effect", something that hasn't been present in cars for quite some time. In simple terms, when air goes beneath the cars, they get sucked low to the ground.

If they dip too low to the ground, down force is lost, which causes the rear of the car to increase its height, which then starts the cycle over again. The rapid repetition of this has a bouncing effect of being sucked to the ground, then raised back up, which as you can assume, kills a drivers lap time.

Because this is a core problem with the design of their new W13 car, it's not exactly an easy issue to fix. Not to say it's impossible to be fixed this season, but until we see that it's proven to be fixed, I would stay far away from betting on them. Don't let the long odds tempt you moving forward.

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is the next race on the F1 schedule, set to take place on April 24th.
