Coppin State vs. NC State Prediction and Odds for Tuesday, December 6 (Coppin State Can't Stop a Nosebleed)

The North Carolina State Wolfpack are 7-2, but the most impressive game on their resume so far is a loss. They hung around with No. 6 Kansas and fell 80-74. Last week, they began ACC play and a win still alluded them. They lost to Pitt 68-60 and will look to bounce back out of conference against Coppin State tonight. The Eagles are 4-6 this year, so it could be an easy night for the Wolfpack, but Sam Sessoms will have something to say about that. 

Let’s get right to the odds for this one, on a loaded Tuesday night of college basketball.

NC State is certainly the better team in this game and the spread reflects that. The Wolfpack are 55th in Kenpom rankings and Coppin State is way down at 293, but the Eagles have one player that could be the difference between a total blowout and a cover. Sam Sessoms is averaging 23.9 points a game this season. The 6-foot senior guard is second in the country in points per game and 21st in assists with 5.7 a game. He’s your classic, experienced, dominant, small guard from a mid-major school. The type of player who could become the darling in March if he had the team around him, but Coppin State isn’t that caliber of team. 

Sessoms isn’t just beating up on bad competition. When the Eagles played Maryland, he had 28 points, 6 assists, and 6 rebounds. The issue is for Coppin State is its defense, which is 362nd in the country in points allowed per game, 85.6. That favors NC State who is scoring 80.4 points a game. 

Sessoms will be able to score and keep Coppin State's offense functional while NC State gets whatever they want offensively, so the over is the best play in this one. Yet, I do think Sessoms can do enough for Coppin State to cover.
