It's the start of the second half of baseball season, and after watching another record-setting Home Run Derby earlier in the week, our team is ready to bet on more baseballs leaving the yard the rest of the season.

The team closed out the end of the first half with winning bets in two of the final three weekend games, as well as Ben Heisler and Reed Wallach hitting on Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto to win the Home Run Derby at +600 odds! BetSided's Peter Dewey did come close, however, taking rookie stud Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners, only to see him lose in the final round.

Let's get the second half action started with a bang! Here are our favorite MLB home run prop bets for today, Thursday, July 21, 2022.

Top Home Run Picks Today

  • Robbie Grossman (+700)
  • Yordan Alvarez (TBD)
  • Mike Yastrzemski (+500)
  • Freddie Freeman (+500)

Robbie Grossman (+700) - Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (Game 1)

I'm already on board with Grossman to clear his total bases prop today, so why not up the ante a bit and back him at monster odds to leave the yard.

Grossman faces A's left-hander Zach Logue who may have the worst numbers of anyone on Thursday's slate. His ERA is rough at 5.16, but his expected ERA (xERA) is almost a full run higher at 6.04. Logue is also serving up more than two home runs / nine innings this season, giving up a dinger on 13% of his fly balls.

As for Grossman, he's dominant as a switch hitter from the right side of the plate, hitting .353 vs. left-handers with a.943 OPS (on-base + slugging) and .414 wOBA (weighted on-base average).

This matchup sets up too well not to take a dart throw at it. -- Ben Heisler

Yordan Alvarez (TBD) - New York Yankees at Houston Astros (Game 2)

The Yankees and Houston Astros play a doubleheader on Thursday, so even though Alvarez isn't in the Game 1 lineup, sign me up anyways for Game 2.

Alvarez kills the Yankees in his career, hitting .296 with six homers and 12 RBIs in 14 games against New York. This season alone, Alvarez has smashed a homer and three hits in just four games against the Yanks.

He’s also clubbed 26 homers on the season, so I’ll trust one of the league’s best power bats to start the second half with a bang on Thursday. -- Peter Dewey

Mike Yastrzemski (+500) - San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers

Yastrzemski has hit 50 of his 65 career homers against righties, and draws Mitch White at Dodger Stadium tonight. The lefty has a 6% home run rate in 79 games with the Giants at Chavez Revine.

White is also susceptible to the long ball, allowing more than one per 9 innings, so I'll go with the favorable matchup and take Yaz to get the second half of the year going with a deep shot. -- Reed Wallach

Freddie Freeman (+500) - Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants

When in doubt during a small slate of games, I'll go ahead and take my favorite player in the Majors, Freddie Freeman.

He has already hit 13 home runs this season, including one against the Angels in his last game before the All-Star break. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an onslaught of dingers come from Freeman in the second half, and I'll back him to hit one tonight.

I'll admit, it's tough to hit home runs against Rodón, but I'll pray from some regression from him in this department as he has only given up 0.3 home runs per nine innings this season.

Let's go Freddie, do me proud. -- Iain MacMillan
