Dalvin Cook Is Biggest Threat to Derrick Henry’s Scoring Title
Dalvin Cook gets better every year.
Every year since Cook has been drafted, his opportunity has increased and so has his output. Last season was a career year for Cook. He accounted for over 1,900 yards from scrimmage and 17 total touchdowns. Despite the Vikings missing the playoffs, Cook -- and Justin Jefferson -- were bright spots in 2020.
Cook is a dangerous threat catching out of the backfield, but he is most dangerous carrying the rock. He had 1,557 yards on the ground and 16 of his 17 touchdowns were on the ground. With the Vikings having weapons nearly everywhere on offense, Cook shouldn’t slow down going into his fifth-year.
WynnBET has released its odds for who will lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns and Cook is tied for first with Derrick Henry with +450 odds. Henry has won the last two scoring titles and is looking for his third. However, Cook’s odds show that he is Henry’s biggest threat to accomplishing that historic feat.
Cook took a major leap last season. The Vikings decided to put the ball in his hands more and reaped the benefits of their decision. Cook’s season wasn’t only a product of more touches, but also increased efficiency. Cook went from 4.5 yards per carry all the way up to 5.0 yards per carry.
His production also wasn’t based on explosive plays, which is good because it shows that he can replicate the same results. Cook only had six runs last season of at least 20 yards, 10 fewer than Henry. While the explosive plays are always fun, Cook will be the steady force this season and make his way towards the top of the leaderboards.
With the Vikings wanted to get back into the postseason, Cook will need to run -- and score-- a lot in 2021.
