Devin Booker's Odds to win NBA Finals MVP Keep Rising Ahead of Game 3
By Peter Dewey
Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul is the odds-on favorite to win NBA Finals MVP, but one of his teammates has made a major jump in the standings ahead of Game 3.
Booker was third on WynnBET’s odds list following Game 1 of the Finals behind Paul and Giannis Antetokounmpo, but a monster Game 2 has pushed Booker’s odds from +400 to +200 and into second place in the standings for Finals MVP.
I was all about the Devin Booker bounce-back performance in Game 2, and he delivered with 31 points on 12-of-25 shooting (7-of-12 from 3) to help the Suns grab a 2-0 series lead.
Antetokounmpo, who had a 42-point game of his own, is still +350 to win the award, but with Milwaukee down 2-0 and oddsmakers expecting them to split the next two games at Fiserv Forum, Booker clearly has a leg up on the two-time league MVP.
Booker had been struggling mightily with his shot after injuring his nose against the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, but it’s possible that he’s finally turned a corner.
Milwaukee is a four-point favorite in Game 3, but if Paul and Booker can turn in another performance like Game 2, it’s hard to see the Bucks winning unless one of their secondary stars (I’m looking at you, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday) steps up.
Booker is averaging 29.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from 3 in the Finals.
Those numbers are worthy of the Finals MVP award, but Paul has been more impressive to this point. If Booker takes the lead for Phoenix on the road, perhaps Booker can pass Paul (-140) as the favorite, making his +200 a potential steal.
