The first weekend of the MLB season is underway and Saturday brings us a great early matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers won their season opener against the Rockies yesterday 5-3. Newly acquired Freddie Freeman had a day and reached base on three different occasions. He also scored a run in his first game for LA. The Rockies got a decent debut from their big offseason signing in Kris Bryant. He smacked a single and drew a walk. However, he struck out with runners on to end the game.

Game two of this three-game series sees the Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin face off against German Marquez on the mound.

Dodgers vs. Rockies Prediction and Pick

The Rockies continue to be plagued by a toxic mix of good pitching and bad hitting. Last night was a bit of both with a five-run fourth inning for the Dodgers and just seven total hits for the Rockies. Freeland was rolling, but the Rockies left him in a little too long in his first action of the year and paid dearly. I think that Marquez presents a bigger challenge for Los Angeles despite some iffy stats. He finished 2021 with a 12-11 record with a 4.40 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. It was a down year for him, but I think a bounce-back season is ahead for him.

Despite my positive outlook on the flamethrower, tonight won’t be a cakewalk for anyone on the Rockies. The Dodgers are so well put together from top to bottom that picking the Rockies to win feels like too much of a stretch. Especially with odds for the Dodgers to win straight up at less than -150. LA has a trio of former MVP winners in their lineup and I think those bats explode tonight in the thin air at Coors Field.

Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (+100)
