Don't Expect More Mayfield Magic on Monday Night Football for Rams vs. Packers
By Ben Heisler
The L.A. Rams picked up Baker Mayfield on the Tuesday before Week 14, and won with him under center in an unbelievable comeback victory two days later.
Armed with a mini-bye week, the Rams now head to Green Bay to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, who actually come off a full bye heading into their Week 15 matchup at home on the "frozen tundra" of Lambeau Field.
Over his career, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 8-2 coming off a bye week at home, and 6-3-1 against the spread (ATS) over his career. As a full touchdown favorite in primetime, via Evan Abrams of TAN, he's 22-3 SU, and 17-7-1 ATS.
Can he add another win and cover to his resume in Week 15?
Let's take a look at the latest odds ahead of tonight's showdown:
Rams vs. Packers Odds, Spread and Total
Rams vs. Packers Odds, Spread and Total Movement
After re-opening with Green Bay as a 9-point home favorite back on December 6, the line dropped down to 8, eventually moving towards the Rams all the way to a 7-point road dog.
The total initially opened at 41, and has since ticked down to 39.5, largely factoring in the very cold weather anticipated in Green Bay on Monday evening.
Rams vs. Packers Prediction and Best Bet
I fully expect the Packers to come out and win this game at home. They're as healthy as they've been since the early portion of the season coming off their bye week, and now face a Rams team who despite an incredible comeback in their previous game, still found themselves needing to outscore the Raiders 14-3 in the 4th quarter, and hadn't come up with a touchdown at home to one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
Green Bay has had plenty of issues all season, but given the Rams' injury woes, as well as Green Bay's long sample size of success with Aaron Rodgers in positions like this over his career, they should take care of business and cover. However, that's been a key issue for them all season. After finishing 12-6 ATS a season ago, including a league-best 7-2-0 at home, the Packers are just 2-3-0 ATS at Lambeau this season, with the second-worst ATS +/- in the league at -6.1.
Instead, I feel more secure in backing the under at 39.5 with the frigid temperatures expected. In the three games that Rams head coach Sean McVay has coached in temperatures of 40 degrees or less, they're 0-3 SU and ATS, losing by an average of -8.67 points. L.A. is also 1-4 to the OVER away from home this season.
With cold weather, a beat up team, and nothing really to play for other than pride, covering by a full touchdown in prime time could pose to be a more challenging task than it should be. I'll take the under at a fair number given the weather and the brutal Rams' offense in 2022.
