Two players looking to leave their mark on this year’s Wimbledon Tournament clash on Tuesday when Cori (Coco) Gauff and Elena Gabriela Ruse meet in Round 1 action.

Gauff, from the USA, is the new world No. 12 and enters this pivotal tournament debut with a 23-12 record this season. At just 18 years old, the rising star has been in great form over the last few events and It will be interesting to see if she can make a run at Wimbledon.

Ruse meanwhile has been struggling of late and enters this match as a significant 7/1 underdog. Can the Romanian underdog pull off a Round 1 upset, or will Gauff continue to shine in 2022? This is the first time the two will ever play on the WTA Tour.

Elena Ruse vs. Cori Gauff  Prediction and Pick

This is one of Wimbledon’s Round 1 matchups that I feel very confident about. Yes, upsets and unlikely events happen. But, Gauff has been so good lately I can’t imagine a world where she gets sent packing this early.

As I mentioned above, she's been hot fire in her last few events. Gauff took second in the French Open and made the semifinals of the Grass Court Championship in Berlin earlier this year. She showed me a lot in those tournaments by beating established players such as Sloane Stephens, Else Merens, and Martina Trevisan.

As one of the breakout stars of the current WTA season, she has the dark horse value to win the whole thing as far as I’m concerned. She reached the fourth rounds in her last two trips to Wimbledon and I’d be surprised if she didn’t get at least that far again.

Ruse is on the other end of the momentum scale right now and has struggled a lot this season. At 13-13, she is No. 51 in the world and was taken out early in her previous two tournaments. Ruse’s best results this year were in Sydney and Dubai where she reached the round of 16.

The outcome of this match has Gauff a clear winner. But, at -1250 she has no value straight up so we look to the spread in this Round 1 showdown.

Pick: Coco Gauff -6.5 (-105)
