Before we start the games, let's take a look at the recent history of teams that start their season early in Week 0.

A handful of FBS teams are in action to start the season, so let's take a look at each team's recent against the spread marks. While it may not be the most predictive stat due to roster and coaching turnover, certain teams have been able to cash for bettors early in the season.

Here is the full list of teams against the spread record since 2010 in their opening game:

Is Northwestern a Strong Bet vs. Nebraska to Start the College Football Season?

Nebraska was one of the most maddening teams last year, finishing 3-9 despite win probability projections pegging them as an above .500 team! Blunders plagued this team in 2021, but there is hype building around Scott Frost's team heading into this season despite him being firmly on the hot seat.

The team is a 12.5-point favorite against Northwestern, who struggled in 2021 for different reasons than Nebraska as this was a rebuilding year for the Wildcats. The two Big Ten teams had the same record for different reasons, which is indicated in the spread. There's more talent in Lincoln, but will that lead to a cover?

History says not so fast. The Wildcats have constantly cashed early in the year under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who has been at the helm since 2006. The team is 9-3 ATS since 2010 while Nebraska, whether it is under Scott Frost or the three coaches prior to him, are 3-9 in that same time span.

History says that Northwestern is a strong bet in Dublin, Ireland catching double digits against the Cornhuskers.
