Fade These Two Big Names at This Week's Open Championship
By Ben Heisler
Following a light week of top-tier players performing on Tour, the final major of the season heads to Royal St. George's for the first time in 10 years.
Jon Rahm remains the favorite over at WynnBET at low-value odds of +700. Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka trail at +1400 and +1500 respectively.
Despite the star power and recognition near the top, the Open Championship does not always set up the same way as other majors. Conditions tend to be windy, perhaps even rainy, and distance off-the-tee is usually not much of a priority compared to tournaments like the U.S. Open. It also favors experience, with 1996 Open winner Tom Lehman telling PGATour.com that Royal St. George's is, "the most unpredictable" Open venue he's ever played."
With all that in mind, here are two major names listed in the top 10 for odds that I plan to fade for this year's Open Championship.
Dustin Johnson +1750
Johnson is a tough fade because of how terrific he has played in majors in the past. But The Open Championship may be a bit of a bugaboo for the two-time major champion.
Before finishing 19th at the U.S. Open, Johnson missed the last two cuts in majors this season. He also ranks 100th in the field via Fantasy National in strokes gained: approach, as well as 83rd in SG: around-the-green over his last 24 rounds, two crucial areas for success at this tournament. While his game is in very good shape at the moment with three consecutive top-25 finishes, I have concerns that the former World Number One ranked golfer is down this low.
One positive for D.J. is he has played Royal St. George's in the past, finishing 2nd in the 2011 Open Championship.
Bryson DeChambeau +3000
There's a lot of unknown with DeChambeau entering a tournament where experience is a key factor. That's not ideal when you just got rid of your longtime caddie and hired a new one.
He's coming off a missed cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, an event he won the year before, and was in contention at the U.S. Open before a dismal 77 on the final day. It's worth noting that DeChambeau ranks 111th around-the-green in the field, which could make for a very tough time at Royal St. George's.
This will also be DeChambeau's first time playing here and just his fourth Open Championship. In those three events, DeChambeau has missed the cut twice and finished T51 in 2018.
While many of us saw him play great in "The Match" alongside Aaron Rodgers, I'm not letting recency bias take over, especially in an exhibition tournament. Oddsmakers sense that DeChambeau is not at his best right now, and I'll side with the folks in Vegas.
